Sports Karate

The Sports Karate Association of Thiruvananthapuram (SKAT) is the official karate association of the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala, established in accordance with Article No. 12 of 1955, Travancore Kochi Sahitya Sastra Dharmika Sangham Registration Rules for the overall promotion and development of karate sports in Thiruvananthapuram district.SKAT is the only Karate association in Thiruvananthapuram district affiliated to the Kerala Karate Association (Recognized by Kerala State Sports Council & Kerala Olympic Association) and the Thiruvananthapuram District Olympic Association.

Sports Karate competition has two disciplines: sparring (kumite) and forms (kata). Competitors may enter either as individuals or as part of a team. Evaluation for kata is performed by a panel of judges, whereas sparring is judged by a head referee, usually with assistant referees at the side of the sparring area. Sparring matches are typically divided by weight, age, gender, and experience.

In August 2016, the International Olympic Committee approved karate as an Olympic sport beginning at the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Karate has been a competitive sport at the Asian Games since 1994. In India, karate is also a competitive sport at school games, university games and police games. Karate has been a recognized sport in Kerala since 2014 by the Kerala State Sports Council. Today, like any other sport, karate enjoys all government sports benefits.

Every year, SKAT organizes sub-junior, junior and senior championships and sends the winners to the official state championships.
